about

The debut cassette release by proto-nickname: Rebel group Krebstar from 1997 in reconfigured form. Included on the original cassette were the tracks that make up most of Krebstar's Barbara Bain EP and the Glass Dad | Schenectady Sound EP by Steven Cerio, Jason Martin and Marc Arsenault. Two other tracks were also eliminated. Stripped down to the original band tracks by Marc and Rob in Krebstar proper it all holds together better as a listen. When first compiled it made sense to throw all kinds of other things in as the mix tape was certainly the killer app of the cassette format. What we have returned to is a cascade of instrumental improv rock sound in glorious lo-fi. It's been my theme music many times. These are the melodies and rhythms at the back of my head. They are the background sound to my time in those high-contrast landscapes of cement and despair that defined Oakland and Schenectady in the 90s.

While it is nice to finally have this artifact complied in a concise form that is more true to its roots, I look forward to distilling the many dozens? hundreds? of hours of recordings that me and Rob made in the year or more after this that have never before been compiled or released. There are a lot of tapes to go through...

Most of the tracks here were recorded live and were first take wonders. Many have what they now call 'extended technique' playing on them. I think back then it was called 'doing Jimmy Page shit' as in the couple of tracks that have bowed guitar.
